86 motor in a 64 car,im guessing it has more than one belt on it,by what im getting by your post that the belt was really loose, sounds loke belt is worn out, replace it with a new one,it isprobley slipping on the PS pully and not turning the pump.
It just has the one belt. replaced the belt but the alternator is slipping and I can't seem to keep it tight enough to keep the belt tight enough. Any clue there. There are 3 placed where it can be tightened up.
OK,you got what is called a serepitine belt that runs all the things on motor, alt, power steering, water pump ect,2 possibilites,it has the wrong size belt or something has been removed on engine,it also has the belt tenionser,it could be bad or has the wrong size black wheel on it,if eather is bad it will not put the right tenson on belt causeing it to slip.
