Wheezing sound when trying to start

Asked by Logan Aug 11, 2017 at 06:33 PM about the 2003 Ford Taurus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Starter went out a while back, so I replaced it & everything was fine for a couple starts. Put some gas in it, came home, went out the next morning to go to work & all it did was make a kind of wheezing sound.

The battery's brand new & all the lights come on fine, so I'm guessing it's not an issue with the power. It didn't sound like it was misfiring before/after the starter replacement, so that SHOULD rule out plugs/wires/timing belt, right? I'm thinking compression, but I really don't have the cash to have it towed to a shop where it's likely to cost me more just to get it diagnosed than the thing's worth. Any ideas?

Sounds like the starter pinon is just spinning. Could be a bad new starter! If you are able, pull the starter and take it back to the parts house you bought it at. Be sure to take the reciept. It should have a lifetime warranty or at least a year.
