Car won't idle
Asked by Cody Jun 11, 2016 at 12:00 AM about the 1975 Ford Ranchero
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My car starts right up and runs good when
I give it gas but when I let off the gas to let
it idle it dies. Replaced the fuel filter but
didn't help. It's a 1975 Ford ranchero with
a 351m. Any ideas?

If the idle mixture screws have not ben adjusted since new, this would help for a smooth idle & easier start-up when the engine is warm. Check out what tennisshoes says, this definitely can be the problem, just make sure the carburetor is all set up correctly and working properly. Should also check for vacuum leaks.
But it ran fine before and just started doing this?
I think it may be the choke but idk
I have figured out its the choke. It stopped working. It's electric Choke and isn't closing. Tried adjusting it but still ain't working. It's getting power. Any ideas now?
bob i know its the choke because when i turn the key it isnt closing like it was before. when i warm up the car it idles. the choke should close when its cold and gradually open as it warms up.

I have a similar problem but my 72 Ranchero GT doesn't have a choke it starts if I give it gas but it will die if I don't give it gas for 2 to 3 minutes!!
It really needs a choke. Your local parts store can help with finding what’s missing.
Then you need to install a carb heater with a timer so it doesn’t boil the fuel to get it to run better cold, It will never run right cold due to the performance type of carburetor but a heater will help. A speed shop can help. Or you could just keep pumping the accelerator pedal until it gets warm enough to keep running.

Okay nice can you give me any more information on these? Thanks for the assistance
The only other thing I can say is converting to throttle body style fuel injection. This will take care of your cold running problem. Holley makes one that is fully adjustable. Not cheap but performance stuff rarely is.

Yikes yeah that's always the problem money :( I bet its easily 1,200+
They start at 1800 bucks these days. Everything gets more costly day by day.
Everything is overpriced if you can get it. I have been waiting for a BCM for over 3 months now, they keep saying it’s on national back order.
There was once a company that made a cold start enrichment unit, there wasn’t much to it, it just used a small electric fuel pump that would spray a tiny amount of fuel into the base plate under the carburetor and you controlled with a push and hold button to make it run. Haven’t seen one is decades. But you maybe could make one if it is really a major problem making it run.
