Can a Ford escape transmission be interchangable with a ford explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I am looking for a transmission for my 2002 Escape. The manufacturer date is December 1st 2001. I have found one but it is 1500.00. So I am trying to look for a cheaper one. The old transmission had a push button overdrive and it went from auto to 4wd with a switch....someone please help!!

No. For starters, an Escape is a Front Wheel Drive vehicle primarily with AWD as an option I believe...while the Explorer is Rear Wheel Drive with 4WD optional. Two completely different vehicles and I don't think the transmissions even share basic architectures (like being different versions of the same basic trans). The only thing I can tell you to also look for is Mercury Mariners, which is the Mercury version of the Escape. There aren't nearly as many of them on the road but hopefully that may open up another option. Check the scrap yards.

They also have to be from 2001-2004 at the newest, after 2004, they don't have the switch anymore. A Mazda Tribute from those years is exactly the same as well. An all wheel drive Fusion transmission may fit as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
