Why is the automatic transmission on my 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis not shifting properly any more?

since Wednesday last week the 4 speed automatic transmission on my '87 Mercury Grand Marquis does not shift properly any more. Lower gears at lower speeds (up to 40 mph) seem to work properly, However, when trying to accelerate up to 70 mph, the.engine is speeding up, but the transmission stops shifting. Max. car speed is limited to approx. 45 mph. What can be the cause and what can I do here ? Thanks for any support, Peter

The link cable and assembly seems to be OK. I can' t identify any defect. Will take the car to a transmission specialist. I fear that the entire AOD transmission will have to be removed and inspected. Any hints / experience how to access the bolts connecting the tranny with the engine ? At least the top bolts could become a challenge ! Thanks ...

what condition is the fluid? Does it smell burned? If you change the pan filter and gasket you only change about 4.5 qts and the whole thing is 11.9. I have a Mityvac fluid extractor and every oil change I suck out and replace 3 qts to keep fluid in top shape. both my Grand Marquis (07, 97) have 200k and run great. I used to be an owner-opperator trucker and learned the value of quality fluids. Never skimp on fluids bro !
