clutch is stiff in ford focus 2002 which I just bought

I just bought a used manual ford focus 2002 and the clutch is stiff.  One mechanic said I need a new transmission!  Can I get the stiff clutch loosened a bit?

check clutch fluid, located on left side of engine bay. if low refill and pump clutch

I think you need to find a different mechanic. The clutch pedal moves the pressure plate. Replacing the transmission won't change that.
