To put it in Drive, you have to start the engine, press the brake pedal while pressing release button with thumb and pulling the lever into Drive. Okay. To take key out, you have to put the shift lever into Park, turn the key Off, then pull it out.

Would my broke key remote stop my 2003 cts Cadillac from going into drive?

No. The remote has no control over the vehicle shifting into Drive. If it won't come out of park, there is a safety interlock that could do that. The sensor at the brake switch may have failed, or the fuse that powers that brake interlock switch.
