1999 allante has a surge idle
Asked by Alex Apr 12, 2016 at 12:20 AM about the 1990 Cadillac Allante
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I can start the car and it will run but the rpm goes any
where from 1600 rpm to 400 or even dies. Mostly it dies
while driving it. If it sits there it'll bounce around tho. I put in
a new t.p.s. (throttle positioning sensor) fuel filter. And still
have the problem. I checked for vacume leaks but couldn't
detect anything. Also shes a lil smokey out of the tail pipe.
Its not burning oil or anything else. idk if thats part of the
problem or what. If anyone has ideas plz help me out. I
miss
this car and automation is coming up and love bringing the
car there. Thank you

A cool car- but that has the Northstar engine, correct?- if so, you are in a world of trouble- it is better to get an earlier model with the regular caddy engine- and find one with the analog gauges- like I said, those later Allantes have some problems- good luck
No they didn't put the northstars in till 92 I believe. they started with the digital gagues on the 90's model but left 358 of them with the anolog dash. If I remember correctly. Anyway do U know what it could be now that it's not a stupid N star
well, you are fortunate to avoid the Northstar- I love the Pininfarina body, but I always figured it was a shame it had caddy mechanicals- now- it sounds as if something electronic is going wrong- something with the ignition or fuel injection- a wrench who knows Cadillac can diagnose it- that's the beauty of it being American, with an Italian body- you don't need a Ferrari mechanic to fix it! here's another Pininfarina-
You need to check your fuel injectors. It sounds as though one or more may be working intermittently?
