53 Pontiac Vapor lock issue

Asked by Cearu Jun 11, 2020 at 11:54 PM about the 1953 Pontiac Chieftain

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi everyone!

I have a 1953 Pontiac Chieftain 2 door hard
top with a straight 6. It has the symptoms of
vapor lock.

When cold it starts up and runs fine with no
issue. However once it gets hot, it begins
running lean and idles and runs rough.

It’s quite common for it to hesitate and quit on
the highway leaving us stranded or will not
start after you shut it off when hot.

Just wondering if you have any solution on
how to mitigate or better yet eliminate the
vapor lock?

Thanks.

If it is vapor lock you need to run the fuel lines away from heat sources such as the exhaust. You can also insulate the lines. I would be looking at a carb rebuild but first make sure the choke is working properly and that the engine is tuned up correctly.
