Can I put an '83 CJ7 body/tub on a '78 CJ7 driveline?

Asked by GordonShumway Mar 12, 2013 at 07:32 PM about the 1983 Jeep CJ-7

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an '83 Cj7 that was mechanically and electrically destroyed when it was flooded during a hurricane.  The body/tub and interior are all still in great shape.  I have opportunity to purchase a '78 CJ whose body is shot but whose "driveline" is in great shape.  Could I simply take the body from my flooded '83 and put it on the '78 driveline and have a working vehicle?

I would think it should drop on. Check with the folks at JeepForum.com. That's where I go when I'm looking for Jeep answers. We've had three Cherokee's so far. --- Which VIN are you going to use? Does the VIN stay with the body or the frame? Which would make the CJ more valuable and/or cheaper to insure?
