Rear Hatch won't open

Asked by brandiar15 Jul 30, 2012 at 03:42 PM about the 2001 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The handle to my rear hatch is rusted out and I can't open the hatch. Is there a way to open this from the inside and replace the handle or jerry rig it?

From inside the vehicle remove the door panel, there is only two or so screws and maybe a clip. Then open the window. Look around the window latch. You should see an access plug. Remove it. You should be able to see the mechanisms to fish around at to open the door. Replace everything once you have access, some of the parts are made of plastic.

Then again, if you have an automatic door opener in the driver's compartment, give it a press.
