oil level 2006 dodge gran caravan 3.8L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I purchased a used 2006 dodge gran caravan. Checked the oil and it was at
the top of the safe zone on the dipstick. I drained the oil for a oil change and
only 2 quarts came out (car takes 5 quarts). I filled the car with two quarts of
oil waited 10 minutes checked the dipstick and it said it was full. I thought
maybe the dipstick was wrong so I checked and the length seems to be
right. Website said 23.85" mine was about 24" part number lists it for a
chryslyer town and country. Any suggestions?

Something has to be wrong. My info shows two engine for that vehicle, and the V6 is 3.3 liters, not 3.8 liters. Also the correct dipstick is 26.5 inches long, not 24 inches. I would have to lay them side by side to compare how the calibration differs. This is what I would do. Finish your oil change by having five quarts of oil in the engine. Mark the dipstick where the oil level is now, and use that as your correct full mark. No V6 will last very long on two quarts of oil where it needs five. Lucky the engine still runs.
I have the same issue with my 2006 Dodge Caravan. Mine also has the 3.8 liter V6 -as indicated by the decal on the valve cover, and the description on the original window sticker that the car sold with. Mine also had only 2 quarts oil when I drained it the other night, despite the dipstick showing that the oil level was at the top of the "safe" zone. My vehicle had a broken dip-stick and it was replaced by the dealer about 18 months ago. The dealer confirmed that the part number used, was the correct part number for my VIN. I compared my new dip-stick, to one that the dealer currently has in stock, and they are identical. I no longer have the original dip stick, which had broken. When you fill with 5 quarts of oil (stated oil capacity per the owners manual), and run the engine until the filter is full of oil, the reading is about 1" higher than the top mark on the "safe" zone. I don't have the dimensions or dip stick part number handy, but I suspect there is a problem with this newer dip-stick, likely mis-calibrated by the factory. The dipstick tube on my vehicle has not been replaced. If anyone has other information on this topic, I would like to hear from you. Thanks -
I submitted the content above. My vehicle had a failed dipstick (broken above the o-ring groove) and a dealer in Kansas replaced it 18 months prior. 18 months later, when I changed the oil, all I got was 2 quarts out of the engine (and filter) even though the dipstick indicated "full". I investigated further and think I've found the answer. For whatever reason, Chrysler's parts system is miss-identifying the correct dip-stick for my 2006 3.8 liter engine. Two separate dealers entered my VIN number and came up with Part Number 4666139 AA dipstick (which according to one dealer, was listed as the correct stick for Caravans through 2005). This stick has the "safe" zone about 1" below where it should be, which causes it to read at the top end of the "safe" zone when you have about 2 quarts oil in the system. It is by no means safe, with two quarts of oil in a 5 quart capacity sump! So I looked at a friend's 2006 Caravan, also with the 3.8 engine, which still has its original dip-stick. The part number on his dipstick is 04694325 AC, which is still a good & current part number from Chrysler. Using this stick, the oil level (at 5 quarts) reads exactly at the top of the "safe" zone. So I'm planning to order a 04694325 stick (listed for 2006 and later engines) and put this problem behind me. Hopefully this answer is helpful to others who run into this issue. Thanks -
