2002 Dodge Durango won't start only single click

Asked by Elizabeth Apr 01, 2017 at 10:22 PM about the 2002 Dodge Durango

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

02 Dodge Durango- the battery died a few weeks
ago so we replaced that and it ran fine for a few
days then one day it just wouldn't start. Got the
alternator and starter tested, starter was bad so we
replaced that. Now it gives a single click when you
turn the key and smokes from the battery terminals
and the hot wire.

There is a short somewhere, first place to look would be at the starter. The new starter may be bad, or there is a wire touching ground.

Check ground straps as well a simple broken ground strap will cause all above usually there's a strap from block to body and frame to body depending on vehicle
