Towing capacity of my 1999 Durango SLT V8

Asked by Sam Jul 04, 2009 at 12:47 AM about the 1999 Dodge Durango

Question type: General

I was told at the Dodge dealership that my Durango will only tow about 4600 lbs but I've Googled this and I'm finding some contradictory information. I've read that it will tow between 6000 and 7200 lbs depending on if it's the standard V8 or the Magnum V8.

Can anyone confirm the correct towing capacity? We want to buy a camper but if towing capacity is limited, it makes it hard to find a good sized camper that our Durango can pull.

Thanks,
Sam

depends on the Engine (4.7L, 5.2L, or 5.9L) and the gear ratios, 4,600 pounds for a any V8 in the durango should be easy

well #1 both the V8s are a "magnum V8" its a difference in the heads on the newer 318s/360s compared to the older ones but if it has the 5.9 liter V8 like my ram does (yes i know they sit on a different frame) id bet you could tow 10,000 lbs easily, ive towed 15,000 with my ram with the help of an air assist suspension.

My 01 R/T is rated at 7500lbs. Engine size does not matter. It is rated for the vehicle. i tow a 18 foot bass boat with mine and it loads it down pretty good.

Just because you "can" pull it doesn't mean you're legally allowed or that it's safe. All manufacturers have a rating on their vehicles. Most have is somewhere on the truck. Be safe...not macho.

The 5.9L SLT can tow 3 tons with confidence. My families 1999 Durango towed our 22' Mastercraft with ease.
