pour a little fuel down the barrel and see what happens

Check the ignition timing. Make sure the carb is getting fuel and that the choke works.

Check that the HT leads are fitted correctly to the correct firing order. Loosen the distributor bolts and move the distributor back and forth a little while cranking. The ignition timing might be out a little.

Is your Card correctly jetted for this vehicle. Have you the correct immoltion tubes ? How is the needle and seat ? What is the float level like. Below the seat in the top where the fuel enters the flaot chamber is a tiny sive, this could be blocked.
