my 1992 eurovan camper, back hatch is locked un able to open it.how can you get it open?

my mechanic has magical hands...figured out *the trick* of key in/turn to 'unlock'(you can feel it.) with subtle handle pressure(outside) IN the *open me sesame* position...takes a few GENTLE tries...good luck.
The manual talks about it a little - there is a position at 2:00 o'clock that should open it manually - you can sort of 'feel' it when its there.
