backup lights not working 87 sedan 4spd transmission

neither of the two backup lights come on when trans. in R,  4 speed OD transmission

Found it. Prior owner had the wrong bulbs in both sockets (dual contact 2057), correct bulbs are single contact 1156. The other possibility would be the neutral safety switch on the trans, but that would likely also not let the car start in neutral. Mine would.
