I have a 2005 GMC 1500hd 4X4. I have a 5th wheel trailer which weights 8800lbs. Is this truck heavy enough to pull this trailer. If not what can I do to upgrade it?

Your truck is rated for 10000lbs (towing)and that is properly "set-up". Start by getting a heavy duty rad, Heavy duty tranny cooler, I would recommend you upgrade your breaks, of course you will need a electric brake controler for the trailer. You might want to get "helper springs" give it a good tune up and change the oil before you start towing. I would recommend that you visit a few Trailer shops and ask them what they would recommend, as they deal in this all day. Best of luck.. This is at the very very far end of this trucks capablities. The rear end is really at its "enough" with this weight, There is a bunch you can do to "upgrade" this truck, but you will still have a 1/2 ton under it all, you need to sell/trade up to a 3/4 (at least) if you are going to be towing this trailer alot or any farther than 50 miles, your brakes, cooling, suspension, rear end, frame are at its upper end. I know guys that tow with a 1500, 150 (1/2 ton) and I would get in front of them. That is just my opinion.
Casper, you are incorrect. A 1500HD is a 3/4 ton truck underneath. It has 8 lug wheels, 3/4 ton components, breakes, etc. Also has the 6.0, tranny cooler, oil cooler, etc. A 1500HD is more than capable of towing an 8800lb 5ver...
what size is the engine and whats the rear end gear ratio? i know with this particular truck it had a 5.3 litre, and a 342, shoulda bin a 410 rearend which would have improved it. and for suspension had air bags installed and it made a big difference in handling. but if i was to get another truck it would be the 1 ton sierra
i would suggest getting a bigger truck. try going for a 2500 with a diesel and you will be able to tow your house the 1500 hd wasn't made for towing a 5th wheel it was made for hauling and for contractors who like to over load trucks

yes you can with out upgrade except for the brake contoler, the 1500hd is the same truck as a 2500 not hd, your truck is a 3/4 ton marketed as a 1/2 ton
