ENVOY WONT START

Asked by MaxVelvet Dec 10, 2017 at 10:10 PM about the 2004 GMC Envoy

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Good Evening

I have a GMC Envoy. 2004 is the year to be exact and it is an STL model.
This morning I started my Truck, drove it from the front of my building to the
back to
clean it out and up to get a detail. Anywho, I parked it, turned it off to unload
the back,
came back to move it to the driveway in preparation to leave:

1st thing I noticed is that my remote was not working. so after fidgeting with it
for a
few seconds, I ran up to get my 2nd key (w/its own #2 on the back of the
factory
Remote itself) But this yielded the same; nothing! So, I went ahead and tired
both
keys in the ignition and although both lit the dashboard lights and gauges, it
did not
start my truck. (neither key! After several attempts) Then I replaced the
remote
battery; Nothing changed. Then I disconnected the cables from the vehicle
battery
itself; yep...still nothing! I did some research and found that I my have
somehow
activated Theft Mode somehow, so I also attempted to reset the FOB's... But
guess
what, the Windows, Door locks and Light dont work either. So after pushing
the truck
into the parking spot in the back, I was manually locking the doors. I got to
the rear
drivers side door (leaning over from the inside of the truck) and locked it.
BUT THEN,
the drivers seat starting moving to a memory setting by itself! I was wowed
by that to
say the least. I then tried the lock button on the remote AND bahdahbing; it
worked! I
started the truck too! All back to normal right! Wrong!! ...lol...(gotta laugh) @
minutes
later, it happened again! I have read it could my ignition switch or my starter
or my
alternator or my blahblahblah!

I am so frustrated ...so if you have any clues, suggestions or advice that you
could
offer...
... I AM ALL EARS!

2008 Envoy Denali. Stalled out while driving. Wouldn't start back (wouldn't even crank). Wouldn't come out of park. I've replaced the key switch, battery, and starter. Still having problems.

I have a 2003 Envoy with a lot of the same issues as MaxVelvet. I know my issue is the back gate / security system. If my truck will not start and I open the back gate and it will start with no hesitation. Also I have had off and on issues with the dash lights and gauges. The truck will run fine but all dash lights are on, gauge needles ie battery fuel... do not move. The radio does not come on and windows do not work. But if I open the back gate all is good. I haven't figured out EXACTLY what the issue is but I'm close MaxVelvet, Have you figured out your issue yet?

My 2005 did this the other week: My remote key would not work. When I got inside my car, nothing lit up when I turned the ignition but the little engine symbol. When I tried to push the lock/unlock button on the door inside the car, it would not work. My son-in-law, who is a mechanic, thought it was something more involved such as my remote started installed after factory, or ignition switch or battery etc. My husband found it right away! My one cable to my battery was lose. Once he tightened that, EVERYTHING worked as normal. Simple and no cost to fix!

Hi, just had this happen yesterday. 2003 GMC Envoy. My car was actually on and I went to back up and it just died. Key would come out or turn back to off position. After several minutes sitting googling not knowing what the hell just happened...I realized I had no power in my vehicle. (Charger cord was not lit like normal when car is off). So I popped the hood and messed around with the battery cables. They were loose!! Tightened them and viola! My car now starts and runs like before. No unnecessary money fished out. Hope this helps someone!

I have an 2003 Envoy. I had most of the same issues. Won't start, windows won't go up or down, dash lights and gauges freak out. Then my son opens the back gate to get his baseball gear. Poof all good!! For me it was 3 broken wires in the rubber boot going between the back gate and the main truck body. I had to pull on the wires a little to find the broken wires. Hope this helps

ok so i have a 2004 gmc envoy xuv, a month ago i went to leave for a dr apt the car started for just a few seconds and shut off and wouldnt start again. we talked to a friend who is a machanic and he suggested that it might be the starter, so we repalced it to find out i needed a battery. so we replaced it and it still wouldnt start. we replaced the shifting cable seeing as how it wouldnt go out of park, and it still wouldnt start. we then replaced the ignition switch ( the box part) and we could start it with the box but not the key so today we switched out the key part with a new one and it still wont start with the key but it will if you do it with the box. i have been right at a month without my car and we have put almost $500 in parts on it and we still cant figure it out. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!

Same happened to my 2003 after sitting for a couple of weeks. Positive cable was corroded underneath. Took it off, wire brushed it and put it back on. Walla all is right with the world.

Check the tailgate wiring harness. It is located at the top center of the tailgate inside the rubber boot. The wires can get disconnected after the tailgate gets opened and closed many times. This can cause a short to ground resulting in a voltage drop, shut down door modules that control front locks, power windows, power mirrors as well as triggering the passlock system which can create a no crank no start situation. If this is the problem, be sure to check all your fuses after correcting the broke wires.
