2004 yukon DVD player

I have a 2004 yukon xl and it has an aftermarket
stereo installed, I cannot get the dvd player to turn
on at all, is the stereo the likely culprit?

Maybe the past owner never had it properly wired? The stereo should send a signal to the DVD to turn on when you turn on the stereo. Check with crutchfield to get a wiring diagram.
