Yukon won't come out of park

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1997 GMC Yukon 4WD. I have been having a hard time getting it to shift out of park. Sometimes I can turn the motor off, turn the key to on without turning it over and shift into neutral and then shift to other gears. What is causing this?

there is a switch that i cant remember the name of that when you pull back on the lever to move it out of park allows you to change gears, sounds like it's failing. If your truck will start in neutral i would suggest having a good parking brake and useing neutral and not park.
Im having the same problem but i have a 2000, but it will come out of gear if i rock the truck. I been rocking it today but it wont come out of gear now. So what can i do to get it out of gear now to take it to the shop
Are you con did the same thing it got to where you couldn't get it into gear at all. Starts right up won't go into gear. It was the brake button. They told me it was the computer I had to buy $1000 computer I change the brake button simple.
