Isn't there an access hatch where you don't have to do either?....just undo the six cover bolts~?

Three sided cut above pump area, bend box metal back, do pump job, beat metal back down then spot weld. That Way you won't have to unbolt anything. Did this a few times myself on older trucks.

gonna be a two man job, to remove the box...got a nice flat area would think about four bolts and two straps at this point~

mmooney is right, gotta weld the flap back, nothing will catch fire, as long as no gasoline isn't exposed~

Tenspeed, can you get those dimensions on where to cut? You probably are more in touch with this info than any of us, so a drawing or dimensions would help this feller~
for sure good idea mark, the cutting part is where i have safety issues any suggestions

I'm guessing a ten inch square but cannot tell from the front or back as some carpet padding is blockin'~

if you've got a sawzall could start with a small hole or perhaps hole each corner and play connect the dots~ tin snips are out of the question unless you're a gorilla~

mind the depth, use some setcollars or a wad of electrical tape on the drill to remind yourself to not drill into the gastank~ the metal is perhaps 12 ga. or .101"~

or if you've access to air power, a "cut-off" tool 3 1/2" abrasive roundNround at 4000 rpm would throw a few sparks but would make a neat job of it~

glad I can help, these aren't too wonky, if you can get 'em clean~
I used a hammer and sharp chisel to start my hole, then i just bent it back and slid a bedliner in it.
