How can I tell if my 1998 Expedition key is chipped or not?

Asked by rlwsw Apr 19, 2017 at 07:09 PM about the 1998 Ford Expedition

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Case in point: got a spare key cut for the 1998 Ford Expedition.  Spare opens the locks, fits in ignition, and starts the vehicle--but then it consistently dies in 1 to 2 seconds.  The real key continues to work just fine.  Makes me think it pry has a chip, but the other pages I'm reading imply that the Home Depot-cut spare shouldn't even allow the Expedition to start.  Thoughts?

If you have the original key, you can program your new key. So it wouldn't hurt to try this... 1. Insert existing working key in ignition and turn to the ON position then back to the OFF position. 2. Within 5 seconds insert new key in ignition and turn to the ON position.. The security light will light up for 2 seconds to indicate successfull programming. Turn key to OFF position. 3. Start vehicle to test new key.
