HELP! My beetle is knocking!
Hi people... I have a '73 Super that I love more than anything else. Last night, as I was driving around town I noticed a faint knocking sound which later turned into a louder and more embarassing noise.
Today, I did a test drive and here are some facts:
When the clutch is engaged or in neutral, there is no knocking at any RPM.
The engine doesn't hesistate, and there does not seem to be any noticeable power loss.
The knocking occurs when the drivetrain is under load, usually between 2100-3000 RPM.
Noise goes away at higher speed (40 MPH+ but this could be because other things are drowning out the noise).
The knocking usually occurs when making a right turn, although recently it's been knocking in a straight line as well.
The knocking seems to be coming from the right rear.
Both driveshafts have no visible signs of damage.
CV boots have no apparent cuts or tears.
Transmission fluid was topped off about 6 months ago.
