I need to check the fuel filter in my 73 VW Super Beetle. The Haynes book show cup sized domed lid where a filter is. It says to remove screw on top and lift filter out.....problem is....no screw on top....how do I get in to the filter

The description sounds like the fuel pump (not filter). If you don't have an inline filter between the fuel pump and carburetor, check for one just below the fuel tank.
