Has the motor been sitting for 20 years? If so, remove the spark plugs and spray some WD40 in each cylinder and let it soak. Yes, drain the gas, check the fuel filters. Are the plug wires in good shape? If not, replace them. Once you get it running, check/adjust the valves. Besides the engine, check (and probably replace) all rubber parts including Brake lines that go to each wheel brake cylinder.

pull gas tank. clean tank out with ACETONE. remove/replace all fuel lines(METAL and RUBBER.) use the "see through" fuel filters. new points, rotar, contacts, condensor. refurb fuel pump, gaskets, rod. goto aircooled.net and get the BUGME video volume #1 it will show you everything for maintence. only cost 30 bucks. watch it and you will see that maintaining your VW is easy.
