I have an engine icon appearing in the display screen - how far can I really drive when it is on?

It comes on and then goes off and it seems to be happening after I fill up with diesel.  I need the car to drive interstate over CHristmas and given that I live in a country town I would not be able to get it fixed quickly.  This has happened recently and it comes on and then goes off on its own accord I have had it to two dealers who both gave me differing opinions on what should be done.  Your adviswe would be appreciated.

Without knowing what code is turning the light on, it's not possible to advise what action to take.
