My girlfriend just bought a 2009 vw beetle. It seems to bottom out on hard bumps. After inspecting the front suspension I noticed a plastic spacer around the front strut shafts. Is this factory or add on?

Sounds factory, how many miles on the car? Over 60,000 I would replace the front struts. The car could have hit several large porholes causing the struts to fail. Any oil on the body of the strut or leaking? If so its time to change them...
