Why is my sf starting then shutting off while parked

Asked by Dpilon Mar 25, 2015 at 04:57 PM about the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Santa Fe started normally this morning but after 30 seconds it stalled while still sitting
in the driveway. I have tried several times (5-6) and it started but shuts off after about 10
seconds.  Now it won't even turn over

Hopefully all you did was flood it, push the accelerator to the floor and then turn the key while holding the accelerator down. Be prepared to help keep the engine running with the gas pedal as your trying to burn excess fuel out of the cyl's. It might spit and sputter a bit but stay with it until the engine smooth's out

Check the truck for trouble codes even if the engine light is not on. The Hyundai vehicles are prone to start/die problems due to a failure in the emissions system, usually in the canister, underneath the truck. There is a filter and a electric valve and some other stuff in there. It is probably the valve gone bad. Do NOT make a habit of clicking the fuel pump when you gas up these cars. Just set the pump to it's slowest setting and take it out when it clicks off on it's own. It has a tendency to cause these failures, particularly in Hyundais. In fact it probably will do this on all makes and models which is probably why every cars's owners manual will tell you not to do this when filling up at the pump.

What do you mean? "And now it won't even turn over" If the starter is not turning over the engine ...that's not a fuel related fault.
