Hyundai has an inherent defect....... here is a copy of the federal lawsuit. A class action lawsuit has been filed against Hyundai after owners of the 2010-2012 Hyundai Santa Fe claim Hyundai knew about a stalling defect on the vehicles, but waited years to issue a recall. Julia Reniger and Greg Bataglia claim the stalling defect can suddenly cut power to the brakes and steering, which increases the risk of a crash, according to a complaint filed Aug. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Hyundai initiated a "Service Campaign" to address the problem earlier in August, but it did not actually fix the problem, according to the suit. "The stalling defect has been documented to occur under a multitude of driving conditions," the complaint states. "Some owners have reported the class vehicles shutting off completely without warning when driving at low speeds, turning or coming to a stop." The plaintiffs claim some owners have also reported their vehicles shutting down while driving at full speed on city streets and highways. Stalls have been reported to occur on both uphill and downhill grades, when accelerating and/or decelerating, when at a stop and even when going in reverse, according to the suit. "Accounts posted on the Internet by Class Vehicle owners over a period of several years vividly illustrate the extreme danger posed by the Stalling Defect," the complaint states. The plaintiffs claim Hyundai says it believes the vehicles can stall when the driver is braking at low speed, which can momentarily reduce the engine RPM. In combination with an additional, simultaneous load on the engine, the reduced RPM can cause the engine to stall, the complaint says. "Consumers who have complained to [the] defendants concerning the stalling defect have either been told that nothing was wrong with their vehicles, that the problem could not be replicated and therefore could not be addressed or provided with ineffective 'fixes' that failed to solve the problem," the complaint states. The plaintiffs claim the defendant intentionally concealed this information from consumers to protect their own financial interests. Hyundai also provided owners with "false or misleading" reassurances that the vehicles were safe to drive, according to the suit. Subsequent to purchase, Reniger's vehicle stalled on multiple occasions under a multitude of driving conditions, she says. The first stall occurred within a few months of purchase, she says. Each time Reniger's vehicle stalled it experienced an accompanying loss of power to the steering and brakes, she says. Reniger brought her vehicle to Mission Hills Hyundai three times during March to have the stalling defect repaired and multiple "fixes" were attempted including, among other things, cleaning the throttle body and changing the battery, she says. Each time, however, shortly after she picked up her vehicle, it stalled again, according to the suit. "Because the Hyundai dealer was unable to remedy the stalling defect after repeated attempts, and the defect was a serious safety issue which impacted plaintiff's use and enjoyment of her vehicle, plaintiff subsequently traded in her vehicle," the complaint states. Had Reniger known of the stalling defect, she would never have purchased the subject vehicle. The plaintiffs claim Hyundai violated California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act, California Business code and breached its implied warranties. The plaintiffs are seeking class certification, an order requiring the defendant to perform a safety recall and compensatory damages. They are represented by Lionel Z. Glancy and Mark S. Greenstone of Glancy Binkow & Goldberg LLP. The case has been assigned to District Judge Laurel Beeler. U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California case number: 3:14-cv-03612
As for your car.......I'd be willing to bet you it's a failed throttle-position sensor (TPS), a common failure for the 3.3 liter motor and a diagnosis the CEL code will reveal. Since they are a common problem, your dealer should have the new and improved part on hand and shouldn't take too long to swap it out.
My TPS has been changed twice in the last three years with the most recent being two weeks ago. I still have a stalling issue at random. Mine is a 2009 model with the 3.3 engine.
This is now happening to me, in Canada, with my 2010 Santa Fe. It’s scary and stressful. It’s haooened 5 times in the last 2 weeks with no warning.
I am in Toronto Canada, 2009 Sante Fe, same problem for over a year now. No codes, no fix.
I own from new 2007diesel santa with only 10600 km Its now stop by it self any time any where and no can find the trouble I live in Australia
I have 2007 diesel sante fe ..it has started stalling at low speeds..no warning just stops...then i have to wait about 10 mins to start again.
This is now happening to me three times stalling going down hill no stealing no brakes and the last time just on the highway.
It is probably the contact point and wire harness issue. Sent mine to SC last month. They cleaned up and tightened the wires. The car don't stall/ shutdown while driving anymore - don't know yet as the car was only driven about 400 miles after the repair. There's other problem yet to be solved... Overheating issue. Need to replace head as it deformed. Request technical explanation from Hyundai Malaysia but no answer (almost a week of silent). I already saw at least a unit with similar issue. I assume it is design issue OR material problem but I'll wait for them to reply. As of now, have to break the piggy bank. The repair cost is very expensive. Don't know if Hyundai Malaysia would take responsibility for this.
There are 3 relays in the fuse box. 1 is labaled Start, the other is ECU Main and the third is RR HTD. When I move unplug them, it will give a few days before it stalls again. I have tried cleaning the contacts with a sand paper, not it stalls less. I haven't bought the replacements yet. I want to make sure this is the source of my problem.
The valve covers leak oil on the alternator and it stalls, you can start it up and drive again but it will stall again. Very dangerous with family on board with no steering or brakes.they don't want to warranty and want to charge approx. $2500 to fix.
2008 Sante Fe here. Same issue. I’ve had a brand new engine put in, new fuel pump new O2 sensors, new starter, new alternator, and a full tune up. Also my car was part of a recall for the computer issue a few years ago, took it in for that repair . My car STILL STALLS AND DIES while driving. Nobody can figure out what the issue is. It’s honestly the most terrifying thing to have your car die out in the middle of the freeway, esp when your children are in the car. Hyundai is gonna kill somebody.
I have finally figured out the problem. It is the fuel pump relay. It is that little blue relay in the engine bay fuse box. I replaced it with a 2nd hand genuine relay and it has been 2 months now and it never died or stalled on me ever since.
This has not been resolved by Hyundaii! Our 2017 Santa Fe stalled on the highway back in April. They told us the harness was fixed. It happened again on Sun. Nov. 10th, again, while on the highway. This time they told us it's a safety issue with the computer that when you drive a high speed it recognizes it as too fast. I have NEVER heard of such a thing in my life. No more Hyundaii cars for us.
I was thinking of buying a Palisade but changed my mind due to issues like this.
I'm having same problem, my Hyundai santa fe has stopped after ABS and battery llights turned on ,I tried to start and runned properly but I stopped for gas and didn't run again, I really need help with this, I cannot afford to still spending my money for a factory error, its a dangerous thing, happened twice.
The Hyundai dealership in my area replaced the throttle body, the TPS I had just installed (2 twice), updated the program on my 2009 Santa Fe 3.3 liter. It has been running well so far. There did not appear to be anything wrong with the throttle body, the dealer wanted to charge for more than a program update. The TPS requires and software update I'm told which was all I really needed.

Its the same problem with my santa fe 2013 here in alberta canada driving in city and suddenly stop the engine its happened 3 times this month of November after several times of attempts to start about ten times before start again...someone told me to change the spark plug i will do it this week...
It's really scaring. The Santa Fe suddenly stalled on the busy highway while driving 130 km per hour in the evening. Lucky driving on the inner lane and got a chance to pull over to the side. Can't image if driving in a middle lane and stopped on the highway in the evening!
Mine was like that and they've changed everything but still problem exist. Once they check the wire harness and tightened all the connection, problem solved.
Too bad! Senta Fe engine shuts off while driving on highway!
It has been occured 5 times this months. Mine is still in garage till now. They told me to change oil filter, crankshaft position sensor, smartra...but till the issue is there. I'm in Rwanda

My 2014 santa fe started months after I purchased it. Scary situation especially when my kids were in the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and nothing was done. Today was the scariest day of my life. For the car stalled all power gone while on the freeway. Barley able to pull off to a side that put my life at risk. Had to call CHP to help me. I don't understand. If nothing was done to warn the consumer. WTH I felt so not in control of the situation the vehicle put me in. I was finally towed after a while. Car is in the dealership. I have a history of this issue document. Who can help me or an recommendations.. thanks
This happened to me today. Bought the car used and it was fine for about 1500 miles then stalled while in stop and go traffic on fwy. Luckily able to coast to safety. Car started right back up and got me home thank God. Hyundai needs to pay for this!
My 2013 engine shut off in the middle of a highway in December. Luckily was in right lane and pulled to shoulder. Because there was a recall out for this Iurr dealership go Hyundai to pay for a whole new engine. But tonight, on the highway going 70 miles an hour the power just shut down again. Was a very close call not to cause a pile up. Selling. Not driving ever again. Two very dangerous calls. New Hyundai engine, ha! Means nothing.
Did anybody's stall and start again before you got pulled to the side? Mine did that today.

Has Hyundai ever actually addressed this fully? Or done a recall? I've fixed every possible culprit for this issue and it's still happening.
