Very inefficient air conditioning

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 1999 civic can get about 40 mpg on the highway with a light load and no air conditioning. However, if I turn on the air conditioning on a similar stretch of highway, my MPG often doesn't even break 30. I don't really know that much about cars but I haven't seen this big of a contrast in gas mileages in the past while driving this car (I used to regularly get 30+ mpg on the hiway even with air conditioning.)
Would it be about time to look into maintenance on the AC? Btw, I got this car used from a relative.

the ek 6th gen civics have small engines and therefore dont take air con very well. everyone i know with air-con models can feel the power drop when they turn it on. small engines often respond more to changes like air con then the bigger engines.

i feel you bro...get the AC and your engine checked for leaks or stuff...my AC's good even on the freeway but i spend less on gas when the AC is turned off...dont put the pedal to the metal...it consumes more gas even if the AC is turned on...
