is 91000 miles too many for a 2009 BMW 1 series? I am looking to buy this used car and it fills every other box perfectly apart from the high mileage.

In contrast, I purchased a 2010 SUV in January 2013 with 33,000 miles it....Not it wasn't a BMW...I just know how ungodly expensive German cars can be to maintain, so I tend to avoid them ..It's a shame b/c I love Porsche and Audi :(

Racer, let's say this car was manufactured at this time of year 2008 as a 2009 model year. That would not be unusual. My 2006 model was manufactured in May 2005. So it could very well be 5 years old. 91,000 divided by 5 is 18,200 miles a year. That's not that much over the average, and is likely highway miles, not stop and go all the time. I must respectfully disagree my friend. A BMW is am extremely well engineered car with a reputation of dependability, and if it has had proper maintenance will go 200,000 without major problems. Sure, there will be things that will need attention but if the asking price is reasonable personally I would not be afraid of it. CARFAX CARFAX!! And service records that may not have been reported to Carfax, there possibly could be many, if the previous owner kept good records and proves maintenance. If it has been wrecked, ever, forget what I said. If it has had major recurring problems, forget what I said. Otherwise a BMW will take you a very long distance. Gentleman's difference of opinion is all we have here. Okay?

The major factor here is price. I scrolled through about 30 2009 BMW 1 series and granted, most are in the 40,000 to 60,000 mile range but there is one with 83,500 with a CarGuru Instant Market value of $18,186. It has value. If you could get this car for, say, $14k to $15k it might be OK, Now millsd....don't buy it. After all I said it could blow up in the street 10 feet from the dealer and you would come after me with an ax and a shotgun.

Thank you for all the replies. It's up for £7,750 so about 12k US dollars if my maths is correct. I'm not going to buy it as have done some extra research around servicing 1 series at the 100k mark. Don't worry... I won't be hunting you down!! :-)

Just my opinion...Racer X is a knowledgeable fellow, His opinion is very much valued by me and others. I respect the man a great deal.

$1.54 US dollars is 1 British lb (I don't have char set and can't make the pound sign, I know a lb is weight)..or the same conversion is $1 US is 0.65 British lbs $11,955...you are right on the money, no pun intended ...and you have done your homework..I have not. Avoid it because you can get the same car with half the miles for NOT a lot more. The more I think about it the more I conclude I have butted in to something that I should have left be, RacerX knows his shit about cars. Period.

Hi David...Good morning and thank you for the accolades! You are right in that the BMW is a well made car (polar opposite of a Yugo or even a Suzuki..lol)...my own brother has a 2001 BMW Z3 convertible and still drives it and hasn't had any real issues with it (He is incapable of fixing anything car related and gets everything done @ BMW dealer). Not sure I would trust ALL BMW owners to be as steadfast with maintenance as this...but with CarFax + proper maintenance records, our OP might be ok, I suppose. P.S. Not trying to turn this into a mutual admiration society..lol...BUT it's the guys like you who've put in the time tearing apart engines and repairing them that I respect...I just read a lot on cars and know how to do some of the DIY stuff :) Have a great weekend...both of you! Im 17 right now, and im looking forward to buying my 1st car. I figured a good german rwd hatch such as the 2014 BMW 114I would be the best car. I am a petrolhead so I want something that is exciting to drive. The 114i ticks all my boxes, however high mileage ones are the only ones in my budget (5-8k). Should I spend a bit more for a lower mileage one? Or focus on finding another car. Bare in mind I am a new driver and my insurance is probably gonna be 2k.
