Do you have the owners manual? It should tell you. A four cylinder engine should take four to five quarts, with a new oil filter. The six cylinder could take five to six quarts. When the old oil is drained out and replaced with new oil, and the old oil filter is replaced with a new one, you start the engine and let it idle for a minute or so while checking for leaks at the oil filter and oil drain plug. the car should then be put on level ground. Then shut the engine off and wait two minutes to let the oil drain back down to the oil pan, then check the oil level in the oil pan with the dip stick. Add more oil if needed to get close to the full mark on the dip stick.

This site say three quarts. Pour in three and check the dip stick. Add a half quart if it's low. ---- http://www.ehow.com/how_7392723_hyundai-sonata-oil-change- instructions.html
