2010 dodge grand caravan gear shifter getting stuck

Asked by Jessica Sep 05, 2018 at 01:31 PM about the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Lately my gear shifter has been getting stuck. At
first I noticed when I went to put my van in park, it
didn't register on my dash. Lately it has been doing
this regularly and showing reverse on my dash and
I've had to push and wiggle the shifter, shut engine
off and even engage the emergency break to
temporarily fix the problem. 3 times we've had to
engage the E break to get my key out and put the
car into park because I  was not able to move the
shifter or start/ remove the key. We have ran a
diagnostic test and it came back clear. Wondering
if anyone has had this happen and what part I need
to try first. We have several options.. new shifter,
dash sensor, and a transmission sensor. We have
checked the cable for slack and other issues.

You will need to take the car into a good tranny shop, the shift linkage needs to be adjusted....easy fix...

I’d be curious to see if your found anything. My wife and kids were recently stranded with this exact thing happening. Stuck in park, though indicating reverse. The engine would start, but not able to pull the shifter out. After several try’s it finally came free and I was able to go through the gears. The indicator light finally also corrected, but that was weird, it changed from red back to green and then correctly aligned to the gear position. I am stuck with the engine light on and the traction control light, and so we put a code reader on it that blew multiple codes. Troubles was the code reader was for up to 2013 and our van is a 2014. Similar but possibly different enough to make a difference. We went from no codes at all to a dozen. Not good! Still baffled.
