Why does passenger air bag sometimes indicate "off" when a passenger is seated?

Asked by FredKramer Jan 23, 2014 at 03:56 PM about the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When my wife, who weighs about 100 pounds, is seated in the front passenger seat, the air bag often indicates "off."  She sometimes places two five pound dumb bells on the seat.  Sometimes this solves the problem.  Sometimes not.  What is causing the problem?  What can be done about it.

The air bag and the operating system should be under warranty. It may be the sensor under the seat is not functioning all the time, or a lose connection.
