what is it really worth?

red convertible with salvage title, scrap value from 3 yards is $150-170. we put $3K into it and if it  
had a good title blue book shows about $3200. mileage unknown, more than 193,000 when
odometer died.

You put $3k into... what exactly? Unfortunately on paper a salvage and unknown mileage are not good issues that a prospective buyer wants to read or hear. Though I've seen some cars that have had engine, exhaust, interior, suspension, etc.... upgrades that are still very good salvaged titled vehicles. I've even owned a few. So how the $3k was spent, matters.

rebuilt engine, rear suspension and tranny and some electrical work. needs cosmetics top and seats redone and paint.
