I'm thinking of getting a  2000 bmw 3 series with
280,000 miles on it for my 17yr old son.Any
suggestions on this type of car with that many
miles on it?Don't want to get him something he
can't afford to fix.

Do not buy that car. 280k on any car is sketchy, but a European car will be 100% disaster. Stick to Japanese. High mileage Corolla will be the most reliable car on the planet. Not as cool, but reliable.

If it has the n42 eng foreget it stick with Japanese they handle higher mileage and parts are available providing service history big help

Mine has 245 on it runs like new . no issues ! Hoping to get another 100 thou plus out of her ! Love my xi
