BMW stalling

my wife was driving my 2002 bmw 325i and when she stop and try to accelerate it only goes to 40 miles per hour. what is causing this issues?

Could be a number of things such as dirty throttle body, plugs, throttle position sensor, etc. As mentioned above get the codes read and go from there. Good Luck!
