Probably similar to paddle shifters, minus will downshift to lower gear and plus is up shift to higher gear.

It is for shifting up and down manually.

Yes Bob, isn't that what I said above, to downshift or upshift?

No Mark, you said probably and a button is not similar to a paddle shifter system.

My owner's manual does not offer Word One about the plus and minus symbols on the knob of my gear-shift lever. I've searched until the book is in tatters. Even if I search for "symbols," guess what my owner's manual does? Gives me a curt dictionary definition of the word "symbol" and a 4-word overview of how symbols are used in place of words in cars these days, really just by stating, "Symbols are used instead of words in cars these days." Under "shift lever" the manual gives me inch-by-inch directions for getting in and out of park, and covers the things that are likely to screw up my attempts to get in and out of park, of which there are many, many. THANK YOU everyone who explained the plus-minus deal to us who want to know. THANK YOU NOT to anyone who replies, "Did you bother to do a google search?" Heh, yeah, I did, that is how I found THIS PAGE! (You guys didn't do that, but other pages did.)

The plus minus signs on or next to a gear shift so you can manually go into a lower gear thus minus or higher thus plus. They are used for towing purposes for the most part

This is in the manual on page 202 for model year 2020. The gearshift must be in "L" (Manual Mode) don't ask why L equals Manual. While in L mode, the Plus and Minus signs will shift up and down. It won't work in D mode. The above answers do not address the L Mode.

After reviewing the answers above, I went to the Driving and Operating section of my 2019 Equinox manual and found it under Manual Mode. Who'd a thunk it!
