knocking noise when breaking

When applying  foot break, there is a knocking  
sound (koo!) at the front or back wheel - left hand
side of a driver while driving slow.  Sometimes it
doen't sound. Three Times in six breakings

First...it is "brake" not break. The thing I would check first would be to see that all the lug nuts are tight as a loose wheel can make similar sounds. Then have the suspension and brake system checked for loose parts. Noises are hard to diagnose via the internet.
