My friends 2012 ford focus would not start when she was leaving work. She said it did nothing when she turned the key. She said the lights and radio come on though. Can you give me an idea of the potential problem(s)? Thank you

If vehicle is an automatic put vehicle in neutral and try to start if still no start remove battery terminal ends and clean.

check the battery does not need topping up.. sometimes the battery shorts across the plates especially when a heavy current like starter motor is involved. This can also cause misfiring and engine cutting out when braking or cornering.
Hello I have the same exact car with the same problem. Were you able to find a solution? I replaced the battery and I still have the same issue.
So many possible problems. That's a very vague explanation.. for a car to start you need electricity and gas, if you're not getting one of those the car one start. So lots of explanations.
Ecm. Common in 2012 focus
My name is Ray. You may need to replace the Neutral Safety switch on the transmission. You can find them online for around $80-130. If you tested the starter itself and it works fine (by jumping the small terminal on the starter to the battery positive terminal) than this is most likely your issue. The Neutral Safety switch is located on the transmission under the battery, so it may take a while to get to it. Hope this helps.
Here is how to test the starter. See Photo. Unless you have the vehicle in Park DO NOT ATTEMPT. - make sure vehicle is in Park, connect a jump wire to the starter where my finger is pointing to... You will see it. Next, connect the other end of the jumper wire to the Positive Terminal of the battery... If it turns the engine over, then the starter is not bad and it is either the relay or the Neutral Safety Switch.
Corrosion is another possibility. Undo the battery terminal on the positive post... Above the oil filter you will see the back of the starter. Remove the nuts from the Starter wires and spray with PB or some Penetrating Oil. Replace the nuts. Follow the smaller wire up to wherever it goes and move it around. If you find a Plug ... Unplug it spray with PB and plug it back in. These cars are very sensitive to a weak battery also, have it tested. If it is testing at below 400CCA it will probably act like the Selector Switch (aka Neutral Safety switch) is bad. Keep them in mind. If I helped you Add me on FB and Like :) Good Luck... If all is good the fix shouldn't take more than 20minutes... You may spend an hour or two, but studying everything is OK.
I have the same car. 2012 ford focus and it has started to give me the same problem. No dashboard lights will come on when you switch the key to on position, and the car won't start. Everything else works, head lights, radio and Windows do open by the remote me. So this means it's not the battery. Please help!
Yo, that boy ray is hella helpful

Got a 2012 Ford focus Se & I replaced the ignition switch & still the car does not turn on
I had this problem with my 2012 Ford Focus and it got progressively worse until I eventually had to have it towed to the Ford dealer. The problem is a faulty TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. I had mine fixed in June 2019 by the dealer at NO COST. Ford has extended the warranty on this item. Don't waste your time and money with all the other ideas to fix this. I tried them all with no luck.
My 2012 fiesta All the lights and radio works but when I go to start it it won’t start turn it on and off about five times and it starts
I have a 2012 Focus as well and had the same issues, Dealer picked it up and bingo a bad TCM. Ford is covering the cost thankfully.
This post has been really great! I also have a Ford Focus 2012 and this literally just happened to me today. Put key into the ignition, dashboard lights came on, but when turning the key it doesn't turn over. No sound either. Unfortunately, we're in the Bible Belt and it's Sunday, so all of the Ford dealerships near me are closed. I'll trouble shoot with the info you all have provided and update this feed tomorrow when I can check the TCM at the dealership.
TCM HACK: Found this on YouTube, tried it, AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED! How to reset your TCM! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OCVWYIPIPK4 This saved me a tow, rental car, and what ever charges the dealership would have charged for the fix. Also, it's so easy (I'm not a car expert by any means) that maybe those of you who took it to a Ford Dealership and fixed it for free, did this TCM reset. Anyway, hope this helps the next person, or if you all have this issue again in the future!
I like a good 'Hack' as well as anyone else especially if it works. I'm not saying that this won't resolve the problem temporarily, it may. I had my faulty TCM replaced by the Ford dealer at no cost. I've had no problems since that time. Why not get it fixed right so you don't have to worry and wonder about when you'll be stranded again by a no start.
my 2012 Ford Focus is the shop now for 1 month. they say all test are okay. car will turn over but not start. they are telling me a timing issue that maybe i need a new engine. any better ideas are appreciated. i did see a video that says it could be a fuel pump?

I've put a transmission in a 2012 and replaced the starter because of damage now the car will not start. Remove aftermarket alarm. Change neural safety switch and even changed trans harnesses. At this point Im thinking battery replacement or ecm
