why are the rpms going up too much?

I have a dodge caravan that every now and then has the rpms go up to like
5000 when I put my foot on the pedal, what is wrong with it?

If it’s in gear then the transmission is getting ready to fail. If it’s not in gear then you have a malfunction in throttle control circuits.
