Subarus have a reputation for blown head gaskets that allow coolant into the combustion chamber. That will result in a steamy white exhaust that smells like coolant. All this depends on air temperature and humidity but if your car smokes from the exhaust more than others, it's a head gasket failure.

I have an ‘04 Outback. The car began smoking when a boot that’s above the catalytic converter split and leaked grease onto the hot converter. The boot is part of the axel/steering system.
