10 below zero this morning, my remote start didn't work, got four system messages (4 wheel off for one), the gas pedal wasn't working, it wouldn't shut it off and it says I have emission problems.

Asked by wdavidneely Feb 14, 2016 at 02:22 PM about the 2013 Ford Escape

Question type: General

At 10 below, I had to go out and start it because remote start wouldn't work.  Went back to 4 messages including no 4 wheel drive, the temp gauge was at max yet it wasn't hot, it wouldn't shut down when I pressed the button, the gas pedal wouldn't give it much gas (only two 2000 rpm), and when it finally did shut down, my dash emission problems light came on.  It appears that I have a ton of computer problems.  Antifreeze is 50 below, and battery is fine.

Cold plays hell with electrical systems. Do any of the problems go away when it is fully warmed up?

After I finally got it to shut down, then started it back up, most problems disappeared, except I still have the emissions light on the dash.

Try and get the codes read to know what is going on. If you can garage your car you may avoid some of these problems.

Garaging isn't an option. Tons of folks keep their car outside around here (I have always done it.) and have no problems. It comes with the territory. If it was 30 below, I'd think about it, but 10 below shouldn't unleash a host of problems like this. There is definitely some underlying issue but I don't know what it is.

Maybe a engine block heater will help. That you are having problems is evidence that the car needs to be garaged. Cold can make electrical connections loose and make computers malfunction. Some cars are worse than others. You could spend enough to build a garage and still not solve the problem so good luck and I hope you solve your cars issues.

If your Escape is still under warranty take it to the dealer!
