Check engine light on brake light flashing cruise control flashing
Asked by Jjmjk Jan 26, 2019 at 01:20 PM about the 2013 Subaru Legacy
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Been having this problem for about 12 months on
and off. Got one of the sensors changed but keeps
happening so its not that. Got oil changed twice
now and each time those lights go away but then
come on a few weeks later. If stopping at a light
engine rumbles slightly sometimes. Lights have
come on after that also. Car was put on scope but
shop said they really didn't find anyrhing..
frustrating!

take it to the dealership it sounds like the torque converter lock up solenoid failing. Subaru extended the warranty on their CVT transmissions due to this being an issue. Warranty covers up to 100,000 miles or if you’re over 100,000 you have till February I believe to get a transmission replaced at no cost. Subaru is a very good company to deal with. If by chance it isn’t under warranty anymore if you call customer relations Subaru will cover at minimum 50% but usually give a 1 time goodwill free repair. Have you heard any higher pitched whining on acceleration? Another common issue on your car is clogged or dirty OCV solenoids. When these start sticking it causing timing to stick in advance or retarded timing. If you haven’t had your airbag recall completed yet take the car in for that and have them check out the issue. You could get everything done in about 3 day turn around time at the most if it’s indeed a trans issue. There are bulletins out from Subaru you can find online for your car too. Most common is transmission/valve body, spark knock, extended cranking, oil consumption. 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback are known for knock sensors going bad too. Hope this information helps
I just remembered that there is a flash to the ECM that needs to be done BEFORE changing the AF sensor if that’s the sensor they changed. Very very common issue. The flash fixes false CEL and P0171 code. If you’ve had the AF sensor changed find out if they did the ECM update along with it. There is a service bulletin out for it

I had this same issue occur a couple days ago on my 2014 Outback while driving on the interstate @70 MPH with my cruise on. Cruise disengaged and the mentioned lights all came on causing me some significant concern! I tried many things mentioned in online postings. The thing that fixed mine (for now at least) is disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes and then hooking it back up. Be sure to turn on the ignition for about 20 seconds before starting the engine the first time. From what I read somewhere it takes that long for the computer to reset the fuel and other settings that it needs to then relearn. When I didn't do that a couple years ago the engine took a while to start and ran terrible for about 10 minutes while slowly improving. Some other things I checked/tried (with no luck) from other postings: tail or brake light out (none), open and close gas cap (while running and not running), check OBD codes and clear (none). I also changed oil since it needed it but that didn't help. And of course I didn't replace the catalytic converter and other more drastic things either! Hopefully it will keep running well. I will advise if not...
