water pump?

2004 grand Cherokee, 200,000 miles. The engine will overheat if started and left at idle after 15 minutes. If I drive it the temp drops and since its cold here now it drops well below operating range and the cabs heat is less than affective as well. Let the car idle again and the engine temp rises and heat returns to the cab but it will overheat the engine if the car isn't moved. Is this the water pump?

no, not the pump- could be the thermostat- could be the electric fan- amazing that thing still runs at all with 200 grand on it- they are not the most reliable vehicles- be that as it may, it sounds like it's time to go through the whole cooling system-
the thermostat was replaced already. from what I am seeing the fan is the likely problem. would a faulty fan contribute to the drop in coolant temp when driven in cold air temps?
I'm having the same problem with my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee it was overheating at idle change thermostat changed the ECT sensor next to the thermostat now if my Jeep temperature starts to creep up around 2:10 the fan will kick on but when I start driving the temperature drops down to like 150 145
I need some advise as to why my temp is dropping that low. Just changed the thermostat a few days ago. 2004 jeep grand cherokee 4.0. 4wd
