Thermostat or water pump?

Asked by Denbob Feb 03, 2016 at 05:24 PM about the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can't drive very far before it overheats.  Is there a way to tell if it's the
thermostat vs the water pump?  Was loosing antifreeze for a while but that
has now subsided.  Now it just overheats after a normal distance.

take the belt off and see if the water pump pulley turns easily if it does it might be bad but check the thermostat first take it out and put it in boilng water and it should open
