Head rest deployed and black holders for metal bar broken

Asked by Priscilla May 24, 2018 at 11:26 PM about the 2014 Dodge Journey

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter leaned on the headrest of my
2013 Dodge Journey after getting a
flashlight and looking at it I noticed that the
black pieces that hold the silver metal bar
that clicks into the two little teeth had
broken is there any way that this could be
repaired or do I just need to buy a new
headrest do they sell a kit maybe to repair it
or do I just have to buy a new headrest
altogether also I don't know how to unlock
the two teeth to put the metal bar into it and
anyone help me?

Mine popped out when I flipped the seat forward to vacuum under the passenger seat. 2012 Journey Crew Asked the dealer about it and they said its impossible for that to happen and it would need to be replaced. I looked at it and pulled the headrest out. Before you do, remove the back panel of the seat and disconnect the 2 wire connector going up the right post of the head rest. There are clips under the adjusment latch to remove the headrest. I was able to remove it and I used a bar clamp place at about a 45 degree angle downward. I just kept cranking it till it was close and then I looked in and saw a piece that I just flipped over to lock it into place. When I did mine I ripped the wires out of the connector. I was able to put them back in and it works but now I have an airbag warning on my dash. The people Ive talked to says its an on or off there is not status code or anything to reset. I've tried to short the wires but that did not work... Looking for an answer...

Please report this! https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ My 2015 did the same thing., after contacting Dodge they want me to take it to their dealership for a diagnostic and quote. I called their dealership and explained the problem, which they know just want it was- the headrest driver side plastic pieces snapped, the cost for replacing a headrest $575 https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ This should be a recall item on Dodge, this i completely unacceptable, and how would this be a safety feature on their behalf, we get in an accident and have airbags deployed and our headrest snap our heads forward?! Come on!

I also experienced the same thing, but when the DJ 2013, 41 K was still in the garage, it was seen that the plastic retaining pins were crack and broken so the headrest could come out due to the push of two strong spring in front passenger. Because of the quality of plastic abs material and this design will be a very dangerous time bomb. For this reason, I unloaded and released the spring to be a pasive headrest for all, it would be better. For reasons of locking plastic material, its design and safety first. If we replace the new part as long as there is no change in desing and a test and verification has been done. The same thing will happen again. The FCA must provide official notification instead of waiting for all bombs to explode at unknown times, Many cases have occurred not only in DJ cars.

2013 Dodge Journey clips snapped while I was driving for no apparent reason. $450 for the part never mind the labor! I will do as suggested and report a safety complaint. THANKS - glad I'm not alone.

Just noticed this afternoon when I went to vacuum it and the headrest looks like the one above. It’s been parked in the yard since Friday afternoon and it did look like that then.

They should replace this free or have this as a recall for all 2013 journey's. I had mine pop out as I was driving, nobody was sitting on the passenger side.

Same thing happened on mine, 2015 Dodge Journey. I have filed a complaint with NHSTA after speaking with FCA. There are currently only 23 complaints we need everyone who has this issue to file a complaint with NHSTA. https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2015/DODGE/JOURNEY/SUV/FWD

•Active Head Restraints may be deployed if they are struck by an object such as a hand, foot or loose cargo. To avoid accidental deployment of the Active Head Restraint ensure that all cargo is secured, as loose cargo could contact the Active Head Restraint during sudden stops. Failure to follow this warning could cause personal injury if the Active Head Restraint is deployed.

My 2010 Dodge Journey just did the same deployment for NO reason. I just purchased this vehicle from my mother and thank heavens she wasn't driving when it happened. It hit me so hard I still have the headache. Would have caused an accident if I hadn't been at a stop sign!!! This should be a recall........SOOOOO dangerous. I will file a complaint as suggested! only 65,000 miles.

Walked out to my 2015 journey this morning to find the head rest deployed. No accident or anything, just sitting in the driveway overnight. Just added a report on NHTSA site. So happy I wasn't driving when this happened.

That happened on my 2013 Chrysler 200. I found a video that said to push it down, then back, then squeeze it closed. Ever worked until the squeeze as I have. Arthritis in hands and neck. Will wait for teenage grandson to fix.

I was cleaning my car, put the seat down and when it was down and nobody was near it the headrest opened. Scared the crap out of me. When I put the seat back up I found little black plastic broken pieces on the seat. 2016 journey.

The head rest has an extended 10yr parts replacement warranty, for those of you that payed a dealer for the repair, you can seek reimbursement from dodge
