Chevy Camaro shuts down unexpectedly
Asked by Frankdant Dec 01, 2015 at 08:15 PM about the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My granddaughter has a 2015 Chevy
Camaro 6cyl. Automatic. She has
had the car in the dealership 3 times
for an issue that the car will simple
shut off while driving down the road.
The dealership cannot find the
problem. The way she puts it. "It's
like someone hit a killswitch"
This can be dangerous if the car
does it in the expressway. Any help
will be much appreciated

When the vehicle shuts off will it start right back up or turns over but will not start or no nothing at all like the battery is completely drained ?
That is a safety issue and I would put it that way to the dealer. Make them take the car back or give you a loaner until the problem is solved. I would take it up with Chevy directly.
Have tried different dealership and they have not been able to find an issue when running diagnostic. When the car just dies in the road she puts it in park and it starts right back. No way to predict when it will happen again
These problem are hard to find until something completely fails..... On these modern cars there are so many things that could cause the problem as the engine is controlled by a computer. If the computer gets an input that is bad or faulty, the ECM might shut off the car. Example, if the engine temp sending unit said the engine temp was 300 degrees, the ECM would shut off the engine, it also could be as simple as a bad connection. However if the car does not have a problem starting.....then it is probably heat related....it never happens until the car get up to operating tempature, then it is probably an electronic component.....somewhere

Frankdant, did they ever find out what was causing your granddaughters Camaro to shut off while driving? We bought our daughter a 2015 Camaro also, last December, well this July I was driving on the interstate, felt a little hesitation, kept driving and when I exit the interstate it killed on me but started right back up. Never did it again until yesterday, October 24th. It died twice when my daughter left for school, came back home and lived up my husband, they drive it, nothing happen. She came home from school no problem, left to go to store, pulling out of parking lot, died again. Been at dealership for 2 full days now and mechanic drive it home last night and tonight. Have not been able to get it to do it again. Can you tell me if your problem was ever discovered?

We have a 2015 camaro also that we bought for our daughter. It started killing while driving. Dealership could never figure it out. We figure it out, THE IGNITION IS VERY SENSITIVE, IT YOU HAVE TOO MANY KEYS ON YOUR KEY CHAIN, WHEN YOU TURN AND THEY DANGLE, THE CAR KILLS. I was driving it one night and pulled out of walgreens's parking lot, there was a big drop down between parking lot and street. my keys were swinging and it killed in the middle of the street. We were so worried about my 18 year old stalling in the middle of an intersection and didn't know what to do next. we are grateful we figured it out. So now my daughter on has her car key and house key and haven't had a problem since. I hope this is helpful to others. thanks,

Where did she get this vehicle? This happened to me in 2015! In 2015, I leased a brand new white 2015 Chevrolet Camaro in Virginia and it did the same thing to me on the express way twice and I almost died. If I had a copy of my 911 call you can hear how frantic I was for yourself. And two other times in regular traffic. I ended up getting an attorney after the dealer claimed that it was electrical and that they replaced the entire electrical system one time. I took it in three or four more times. They forced me into anger by telling me that it was nothing else wrong with the Camaro and expected me to continue driving a deadly car! Then it happened for the third then fourth. After notifying them about my attorney, they ended up trading me right back but, into another model. I chose to stay away from Camaros and I'm glad I did as I see this person's story. That's why I'm curious about whether or not she got my trade in some how or are there something wrong with all Camaros, 2015 Camaros, or all Chevrolet vehicles? Do you all still have the vehicle or did they put you in a safer one? I hope your daughter is well.

Also yes, someone hit the kill switch. I'm assuming it was OnStar. Previously OnStar had kept contacting me and I ended up telling them to leave me the hell alone while I was driving. That is when all of my issues started. OnStar has this capability to kill the car if it is stolen. All if the steps that occurs when OnStar kills the car is exactly what happened to me. The car began to stall a little at first, the dashboard lights all turns off, the steering wheel slowly stiffens, just enough time for the driver to pull over then it goes complety dead! Just as it states when you look up what happens when OnStar shuts down a car due to theft! I called them multiple times about the terrible customer service and how I suspect it was them who kept killing my car after we had fallen out about them coming through to me while I was trying to drive when I did not call them. Of course they denied this and claimed they investigated and didn't find such. I honestly know that they are lying, humans are humans, they kill people everywhere everyday, plus they wasn't going to admit it even if they found one of their Representatives crime! When I told the dealership owner who I ended up working with about this, he looked at me as if I was not there! So CarGuru somebody look into Chevrolet and OnStar doing this because they need to be brought to justice before many more people become endangered. I wonder if anyone has been in a serious vehicle accident behind this? I was very blessed to have survived this with no compensation at all till this day!
mslong2007 answered 5 years ago
And as far as the person on here claiming it is the keys, this is still not acceptable. These cars should be recalled and all customers should be compensated. If a car can not with stand multiple car keys on a key chain, then it is a faulty and unsafe vehicle. Turning off while driving is unacceptable especially to those who are unaware of this. It is not up to the customer to know that these Camaros key ignition will turn off if they have multiple keys on their keychain!?! Really!?! No ma'am no sir.
I have a 2000 camero , does the same thing, and I have a friend who has a 2005 camero does the same thing and has spent over a thousand dollars at two dealerships and it still dies unexspectedly . All power is shut off so there's no power steering or power brakes, dangerous ! I can't find anyone with an answer
Check your air filter. It may be dirty or clogged. Either clean it or buy a aftermarket air intake filter. My 2015 Camero LS was having this problem and once I cleaned my air filter it stopped by that night.

i posted on this feed about a year ago because my young daughter's camaro started killing on her for no reason as well. I'm happy to report we have not had the problem anymore after realizing the heavy keys in the ignition was what was shutting the car off. It only happened when we were turning, coming out of parking lot, uneven ground which cause the keys to swing. We took it to dealer over and over again... well when they drove the car they only had the one key in the ignition. It never died on them. Every car is different, I'm only telling what has work for us. Best of luck to you all.
I am now having the same trouble with my daughter's 2011 Camaro LT V6 with automatic transmission. So many of you post that you are having the problem, but only ONE person has posted a solution! So frustrating. Thank you philnsabey for updating with solutions both times, much appreciated! Unfortunately, it has not fixed our problem. Even with -just- the key (no fob, etc), it will still stall. It started out first with a slightly hesitation or "bucking" while driving. I thought it was a transmission problem...like when the car was under load a little (going up a slight incline) and you pressed on the gas a little. Like it should downshift, but couldn't make up it's mind. It would happen once or a few times on a trip. And usually when performing a right-hand turn...I know, weird. Now it has progressed (unless a completely different problem) to actually stalling. Now, that all started with it stalling while reversing out of a parking space. It would restart fine and she'd go on her way. Then a few weeks later it happened again. Now it happens often. Nearly all the time at very slow speeds. But one time now it has stalled when driving, while slowing down in the right-turn lane to turn right. Putting the car in neutral and restarted while it still moved, allowed her to continue. Now she's afraid to drive it. I don't blame her. I can get it to stall several times in a test drive. 85% of the time in reverse. It's running great, and then simply shuts off. All lights, stereo, etc. stay on. Only the reverse lights will go out. Anyone that can respond to how their car was FIXED would be hugely appreciated! If you help me properly fix it, I'll even send you something, seriously!
My 2012 Camaro, has been dying on me while driving and no diagnostic codes, ever came up. I was always able to restart the car back up without a problem. I wrote a few issues that I experienced. 1st) I put the key in the ignition, turn the key to start the car and nothing! I repeat the process and the car started without any issue's. 2nd) When turning on my left turn signal, I received a warning to check the left rear turning lamp. After 2 days the code went off. ( In not sure if this had anything to do with the key) 3rd) While driving, I turned on my left turning signal. I proceeded to the left turning lane but I was stopped by a red light. By the time I came to a complete stop my car shut off, i heard a click then every light on the dashboard lit up and the car RESTARTED by it self. 4th) My car died on me while driving but the dashboard was still lit. 5th) Every light on the dashboard lit up, I hear a click then the car died. After coming to a complete stop the car restarted without any issues. 6th) While driving over a pothole and going over a speed bump my car died completely (no radio or dash lights) then i heard a click and the whole dashboard lit up. I turned the key in the off position and restarted the car. **All of this happened within 4 day because I wasn't able to get to the dealer any sooner ** Sorry to go into detail but I hope this post would help someone out...so long story short. I took my car to the dealer, after test driving my car it was immediately hooked up to a scanner and a transmitter code came up. GM had a recall for the original keys so the dealers removed the key blade from the original flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies, and provide me with two new keys. It's been 2days and I haven't bad any more issued
Glad to hear you have found a fix. Since I posted 5 months ago, we've still not figured out the problem. It'ss not the key like you as we already had that recall fixed. I am led to believe now that it is a ground problem in the main engine harness, somewhere possibly on the passenger side rear of the engine. The last time it happened was driving 50mph with cruise. Tapped the brakes and then hit the gas and the car just shut off. Pulled over and it restarted And has been fine for over a month. ???!!!
Replace the drive shaft sensor,,, worked for me after trying about everything else,,, I've since added another 15,000 miles. The problem first started when I got into a foot of water.

I do not agree with the key theory since my sons 2016 does the same thing with a push button start/off there is no ignition key ... His has shut off twice while driving but has an issue of not starting numerous times with a wait time of 5 to 20 minutes before it will start... We've had it to several different dealerships nothing never shows up on the machine ...
So I had this exact same problem with my 2017 Camaro. Randomly when I would drive, the car would shut off. It would kill if I was going up hill or speeding at random times. Then I remembered that I Changed out the battery a while back. I went back to check the battery and sure enough I realized I didn’t fully clamp the terminal all the way down with the self locking nut bracket that they use. Tightened that down fully and the bracket to hold the battery in place. Oh and I also hit it with a little hammer to see if my car would shut off and sure enough it did but came right back up. I’m guessing if the terminal moves just the slightest the arc in the terminal cuts of electrics in the car for a split second for it to come right back up, it also makes sense if the battery isn’t bolted down because the slightest movement with a loose terminal would probably cause the arc to happen. The car would have this issue everyday if not every other day, I’m on the second week and the issue hasn’t came back up. If tightening the terminals doesn’t fix it I would look at the wiring from your battery to see if you have a short there. Hope this helps all of you guys out there.
Recently had the same problem on my Camaro 2013. It would shut off, even on red light. Took it to the shop and it was the high pressure direct injection pump. Hope that helps.
Same thing happen to me on my brand new 2020 !!!!!!!!!!
I have a 2014 Camaro and it died 3 times while driving today. Scared to drive it to work now.

My 2012 just died getting on the freeway last Sunday. I had my battery and altanator fixed in Dec.2020. Took it to the dealership, only thing came up on the Readings, it coded (Theft). All 3 different times. I asked if the tech could check the key issue, because I had my Key changed by the dealer at the end of 2019.
I had the same issue yesterday. However I hit a curb and blew out a tire. It just completely cut off.

I am sorry but glad to see all of your post I have a 1987 and quit driving due to not trusting it as never knew if it would get where I needed to go.. Yes, I have 1 set of keys that seem to work best. I finally threw the others all away.. Sorry all of you are going through the same thing.
My 2013 Camaro was doing that. I replaced the plugs and coil packs and it still did that. I replaced the ignition switch and still the same. Changed the engine control module twice and reprogrammed it twice and STILL the same thing. Then I had the accessory wiring fuse block replaced and guess what? It FIXED IT! Now my car is running and driving like it’s brand new! Even the gas mileage is great now too! GM Parts Direct $350 for the block and it’s easy enough for anyone to put it in!
I posted about this issue with our 2011 Camaro about 3 years ago. I would get a whole bunch of codes when I scanned the OBD-II connector. Too many to know what the cause was. I reset it to clear everything. Then as soon as the light came on, I scanned it. The passenger side oxygen sensor was flagged. I cleared the codes. Check engine light came on again, same oxygen sensor. So I replaced it. Never has stalled since! It's now been 3 years and the car has been running just great.
