Jeeps have their own version of AWD so it either in auto mode or lock, in lock the transfer case tries to send power the wheels that have traction equally between front and rear differentials, in auto mode it takes readings from all the wheels looking for any slippage and if some is detected is transfer power away from those wheels. This is oversimplified I know, there is more on Jeep systems on You Tube.
